The Story Behind Bliss
As a painter, photographer and image-maker, I enjoy experimenting with different levels of light in my reference photographs. Some of the most interesting images emerge from severely underexposed photographs, where I rework only what interests me, particularly the emotional resonances that reveal themselves.
For Bliss, I wanted to convey what it feels like to receive from the Divine.
One day, as I was brushing my hair before a mirror, sunlight from a small skylight in our house fell across me. I was struck by the narrow band of light spilling over my face and shoulders. When I closed my eyes, I could feel both the warmth of the light and the sense of being given a gift.
I used a very outdated camera that could capture only a limited amount of information and took several photographs. Working from those references, I digitally painted this representation of the gift of light, and of the gratitude I felt in receiving it.
