Photography

Images discovered, interpreted, and composed through a lifetime of looking closely.

My father was a photojournalist during World War II, covering the Pacific Theater. I would pore over his albums of combat, people, and cities, pondering the emotions they stirred and the questions they raised.

At eight years old, I picked up one of his cameras, loaded it with film, and went out into our little neighborhood to see whether I could capture anything that might make me look at the resulting photograph twice. I was not an immediate success, so I kept trying.

Eventually, photography became an expressive joy, one that not only revealed something of how I saw the world but, at its best, invited others to see it anew.
