Behind the Prop

As Visual Effects Supervisor for WISHBONE, I was accustomed to creating unusual sequences for the series. I had mentioned to members of the Art Department that I was also a sculptor and would be happy to help whenever they needed a prop or set decoration.

One day, Contemporary Art Director Barry Phillips asked me to create “a scary version of Wishbone” for Wanda to unveil in the episode “Cyranose.” The deadline was only two or three days—not unusual for the series, but still a formidable amount of work in very little time.

As the deadline approached, I came down with the flu and ended up sculpting the prop at home while quite literally sick as a dog. My discomfort may have contributed something to its wonderfully alarming character.

The finished articulated sculpture appeared in “Cyranose” and was also featured in the opening title sequence for the series.
